OOIOO & Lightning Bolt - THE HORIZON SPIRALS / THE HORIZON VIRAL
Japanese space cadets OOIOO sound ecstatic and space-y in this split album without losing their sense of whimsy. They just sound like they're having a whole lot of fun, and that sense of play bleeds into you as you listen. The lead vocalist's really singing her heart out on the second track. Super good stuff.
Providence art-damaged noise rockers, Lightning Bolt, meanwhile, completely flip out in a way only they are capable of. Honestly, though, I feel like their songs could have benefitted from the same playfulness that courses through OOIOO's tracks. Lightning Bolt's songs here just feel a bit too CRASH DOOM NOISE EVIL, if you will. I do really love Lightning Bolt, but these tracks need to lighten up.
