A theory of badness
I had a thought today:
A bad1 painting can easily be enjoyed by many people because, to experience it, you can just look at it. It doesn't take much effort, so you can forgive that it doesn't have much aesthetic interest.
A bad book is harder to enjoy because it takes more effort to experience. You have to decode the words on the page into meaning, usually over multiple sittings.
A bad movie is in between, I suppose. It takes time to take in fully, but you don't really have to do2 much in order to experience it.
Obviously, none of this is sacred. Just some thoughts.
